Short, Nigel

Nigel Short became the first Englishman to challenge for the World Chess Championship since Howard Staunton in the 1840s when he faced Garry Kasparov in London in 1993. A child prodigy who defeated Viktor Korchnoi at age 10, Short reached the world's top five and was instrumental in the creation of the Professional Chess Association alongside Kasparov.
