Euwe, Max

Max Euwe was a Dutch mathematician and chess player who became the fifth World Champion in 1935 by defeating Alexander Alekhine in a closely contested 30-game match. Known for his logical, methodical style and encyclopedic knowledge of opening theory, he balanced his chess career with a professorship in mathematics and later computer science. He went on to serve as President of FIDE from 1970 to 1978, shaping the organization of world chess during a pivotal era.
