Portisch, Lajos

Lajos Portisch, nicknamed the "Hungarian Botvinnik" for his scientific approach to chess, dominated Hungarian chess for decades with eight national championships and qualified for the Candidates Tournament eight times. He competed in a record 20 Chess Olympiads and reached world number two in 1981, leading Hungary to Olympic gold in 1978 -- the only Olympiad not won by the Soviet Union between 1952 and 1990.
