The Pirc Defence is a hypermodern system where Black allows White to build a centre and then counterattacks it. The Austrian Attack (f4) is the sharpest test, while the Classical (Nf3, Be2) leads to quieter play.

Named after Yugoslav GM Vasja Pirc. It was used by many notable players including Viktor Korchnoi.
